ABOUT US

Arnold A. Schwartz emigrated from Buenos Aires to the United States in 1888 at the age of 16.  Schwartz entered the printing trade in New York and rose to the position of superintendent at the magazine printer, the Schweinler Press.  In 1907 Schwartz bought a controlling interest in the Art Color Printing Company, which was also located in New York.  He moved the company to Dunellen, New Jersey in 1925.

The company grew to 2,000 employees, and, at its peak, produced and average of 28 million color magazines and catalogues monthly.  Mr. Schwartz, known to many by his middle name, Alec, was considered by some to be a genius in printing.  He also made a significant impact on the community through jobs and culture he created.

Mr. Schwartz was known for his philanthropy, which included his food giveaways on Thanksgiving and providing food for hundreds in Dunellen and Plainfield during the depression.  In 1953, Mr. Schwartz engaged his trusted advisor, Plainfield, New Jersey attorney, Irving Kunzman, to create a foundation to enable his philanthropy to continue during and beyond his lifetime. Mr. Schwartz became the Chairman of the Board of the Arnold A. Schwartz Foundation, and Mr. Kunzman, became the President. The initial trustees included other business leaders in the community.

Mr. Schwarz passed away in 1963 leaving the legacy of the Arnold A. Schwartz Foundation. Ten years after Schwartz died, the Foundation provided funds for the construction of the Dunellen Public Library, known as the Arnold A. Schwartz Memorial Library. The Foundation continues to provide annual support to the Library.
